Investment:
Yes, investment. Your pictures are an investment in your history and your memories they are priceless you should be sure you are working with a professional who’s worth what your cherished moments are worth. How do you know if you are getting your money’s worth?
In the digital age the leap from amateur into professional is happening at a staggering rate. With the lack of film and processing costs, a thousand images can be taken with a modern self-thinking digital camera, and by golly, some of those are pretty good! Many amateurs overlook the general photographic theories and strategies such as, lighting, exposure, composition, and color balance. While those amateurs may have some impressive images, often times they don’t know what they’re doing and couldn’t recreate the image. Though far from professional standards, a little motivation and good shots and it’s a quick jump from photographing the kids to purchasing your own website.
As a result it may be difficult for you to determine where to spend your hard earned dollar. How can you tell who has the experience needed to serve your needs?
Asking about the cost of an 8×10 is typically a pretty good indication, a lower cost will always indicate more amateur work, however even an eager amateur will be brazen enough to charge a high fee. Don’t despair there are other things you can ask to get what you need.
I’d start by asking them how long they have been a professional photographer and where they learned their craft. (Go with your gut on their response)
Then pull out the big guns, “Why should I hire you instead of another local photographer”, hesitation in answering this question is as important as the answer.
If the answer is about fast service, lower prices, or new equipment, say thank you and continue your search elsewhere, you are talking to a beginner.
A professional takes pride in their work. Rather than being concerned with speedy service, they will be interested in taking the time needed to give your unique images the proper attention. After all, we’re responsible for helping you to hand down these beautiful memories for what we hope will be generations to come! A true professional also knows that while it’s nice to have new equipment, the quality of your images does not rest on the price tag of your gear!
If the answer is about experience, professionalism, and artistic quality then let your questions about price be your last, by now you should know enough about your photographer to determine if the value of the product matches the price tag.
